Will India Ever Change?
Forget about changing your character or attitude, think and honestly answer, did you or did you not roll down your car window and throw out that chocolate wrapper? And the time when you lifted your helmet to get rid of the bad saliva? Oh yeah, that’s very different from spitting. You did it only because it felt uneasy in your mouth, totally fine!! Yes. Will You Ever Change? And Will India Ever Change?
Pardon me for the rude tone, but I badly need to ask these.
What the heck? You drive a Hyundai, a Chevrolet or even a BMW, but your brain can’t process a simple thought and stick to it? If you can’t find a garbage disposal, hold on to the trash a bit, reach home and get rid of it.
I get super pissed off when I notice people littering and spitting having their kids around. The other day on a train, there was this lady with two children, busy talking over the phone and her kids just wouldn’t let her. She pulled a newspaper from her bag and taught them a game. ‘Tear the paper to bits and throw ’em off through the window’. The children immediately took to this littering game and she happily got back to her call. I had to hold myself back from appreciating her presence of mind. Such parenting techniques!
Being a regular on the local suburban train, I kind of forced myself to get used to these scenes. I understand how difficult it is to spend more than an hour commuting. What better to do than to put that time to use? And what is better than snacking? The good thing to notice here is, more and more people are shifting to healthier snacks these days. Eat groundnuts and throw away its shell (or whatever it is called), orange pulp into the mouth, their seeds onto the floor. Seriously? Not even for a second, you can comprehend of an alternative?
The sad part is, we think lack of education is the reason behind why people do whatever they do. But no, I’ve seen girls wearing college tags and office goers with their company name proudly endorsed on their bags do such things. Why does it not occur to them? Even after so many campaigns, awareness drives and Swachh Bharat cries, why? Will this ever change?
Don’t even get me started on public urination. If at all it cannot be controlled and you have no other choice, extrude not on some concrete wall or platform that stinks and chokes your fellow beings but directly to the soil. May you take this opportunity to contribute in making the soil healthy and adding the nutrients back to where it belongs!
And for people like me who are sensible to such incidents happening around, try and talk some sense to that person subtly, for most of the times if it’s not you and me doing it, it’s our friend or relative next to us. I have tried it out a few times with strangers and of course, it always doesn’t end well. But then, what else can you and I do?
Oh and please please don’t be a bad influence in front of kids, the small things do matter to a greater extent tomorrow.
Finally, yes India is dirty, unhealthy and mostly unattractive, I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Besides everything, our heart does get heavy with patriotism everytime the national anthem is played.
Please don’t deny your tiny responsibility in putting our country on the path of change. And don’t make it worse for the generations to come.
The MagZone is making a plea to everyone out there keep India and yourself clean!
