“Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. But inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read”
I was in grade 3 when I first came across the proverb – ‘books are man’s best friend‘, written on top of the board, as thought for the day. The very same day, my teacher asked us to write a short paragraph on our best friend. Now different from what me and my friends wrote, the topper lad of the class had described his best friend – a book, in beautiful English, which, at that time went right above our heads.
I now wonder where would I have landed up if I hadn’t realized the importance of reading. But again, it’s better late than never.
Here are 5 reasons why you should start reading if you haven’t already yet.
“Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it’s a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it’s a way of making contact with someone else’s imagination after a day that’s too real.” As Nora Ephron rightly put it, books are our escape from the harsh realities of the world we live in, but at the same time, you come back stronger than ever.
2. Learn at Your Own Pace
Books are the best teachers; better than life. This won’t be an overstatement when I tell you that life has its own terms and conditions. It’ll gag you out of the class if you don’t follow its time. But books? They work on your conditions 🙂
Be it your teacher in school or your first date, admit it that when they got to know you read, you had them stirred (in a positive manner, obviously!)
4. The Joy of Spoiling
If you’ve already read the book before, you are capable of spoiling the movie or television series (you know the reference, don’t you?)
5. To Good Beginnings
New in school, first day in college or saw a beautiful girl in the metro who’s already reading a book; it’s always safe to start a talk over a book. Also, ever thought about your first date to a library than a cafe?

These were things apart from knowledge, confidence and imagination that give one an upper edge. So dear non-readers, grab a book as soon as possible because a book can wait, but the world won’t 😉
