In another data breach reported by some major news organizations, it has been reported that a minor google search “Mera Aadhaar Meri Pehchan” leaks Aadhaar details of several individuals including their name, address, and date of birth.
Previous news has also suggested that a French hacker has reported several flaws in UIDAI’s mobile app by posting a video on twitter explaining how to bypass the password protection on UIDAI’s app. Aadhar database contains the data of almost 115 crore Indians and is one of the biggest databases in the world.
“Mera Aadhaar Meri Pehchan” is the tagline of Aadhar and interestingly the same search query which involves the leak of data as reported by Moneylife.
There were several major concerns which were reported and brought to notice before as well:
The data of Aadhaar is centralized, that is, it is governed by the supreme authority of India. Several petitions have been filed in Supreme Court regarding the same concern.
The Project is to be accomplished by Private companies:
The whole process is to be accomplished by private companies involving private individuals thus making the data more vulnerable. It was also reported that several foreign countries were also involved in the process.
Bank Details Linkage:
It has become mandatory to link Aadhar with the bank accounts which is also linked with the PAN card of holders which means if the data is leaked, individuals will become vulnerable as all of their personal information will be able with just one click (which is exactly what has happened). Several major concerns have been reported regarding the vulnerability of bank details as well.
Right to privacy:
Aadhar stores the details and data of each and every individual of the country which is further asked to be linked to Bank details, PAN, and even the mobile numbers. This clearly raises a concern towards the Right to privacy of the individuals and the supreme court has also highlighted the same.
The Aadhaar details of some unknown individuals can be accessed through minor Google search “mera aadhaar meri pehchan filetype:pdf”.

Though the biometric details have not been leaked but it doesn’t undermine the severity of the issue. You can access a person’s Name, Address, and Date of Birth by typing few keywords on google. Should safety of the individuals and their privacy be that easily accessible with just a simple click? There are endless possibilities in which this data can be misused. This needs to be addressed and immediate actions should be taken.
The individuals need to be assured that the faith that they have put in their Government is justifiable and their right to privacy stay intact.
