Debunking 11 Common Myths About Feminism

Myths About Feminism

We have been witnessing myths about feminism. The movement has gained the support of many but at the same time, it also has become a topic of hatred. Knowing about feminism and not deciding to support it is one thing but not knowing about feminism and bashing it is just a whole new level of ignorance.

Here we will debunk a few most common myths about feminism that’s ingrained in the minds of many.

1. FEMINISM IS A CONCEPT TOTALLY NEW

NO! What makes you say that? Organised feminism kicked off with the first Women’s Conference held in Seneca Falls, America, in 1848. Ever since that, there were many waves of feminism and many categories of feminism that emerged. Thinking feminism is a new concept that gained momentum in the 20th century is nothing but a misconception. However, it can be said that more feminists started joining the movement and the aims expanded.

2. FEMINISTS ARE A BUNCH OF AGGRESSIVE VIXENS

Wow! This is what happens when you generalize a casual observation of a few cases to a larger population. There is a straightforward difference between FEMINAZIS and FEMINISTS. You can have a complex, controversial topic discussed peacefully over a cup of coffee with a feminist without she pouncing on you for not agreeing with her or not getting her point. You may come across an aggressive feminist but that could be just one rotten mango out of hundreds in the basket.

3. FEMINISM IS AN ANTI-MALE IDEA

This can be counted as one of the major misconceptions about feminism. A misconception that causes many males to cringe or frown or even get mad at the word “FEMINISM” alone. But the idea of feminism is not male bashing or degrading men. It’s a fight against patriarchy and whoever supports it, then be it a woman. It is another term for “a fight for gender equality“. It does not only claim equal rights for women but also for men. It’s not only fighting against expected gender roles from a woman but also those from a man. When feminists disregard the idea of women associated with pink they also disregard the same as men associated with blue. You can be a man who loves wearing pink and this wouldn’t make you any less of a man. So, to all those men out there, embrace FEMINISM, for it also works in your favour.

4. FEMINISTS FAVOUR ALL WOMAN

Even without the term feminism attached, this statement is just not true. It’s a human nature to hate and envy others and as for the fact that feminists love all woman and work for their favour, this statement is false. Feminists do not get along well with those women who despite being women support the male-dominated system and are just contented in their self-confinement.

5. FEMINISM IS AN ALL-WOMAN MOVEMENT

NO. Definitely not. Feminism is an umbrella term for fight against racism, casteism and class distinction along with sexism. Any man who works for equal rights of women and supports their endeavour is also a feminist. And let me ask you if all men become feminists, will we ever need a movement like FEMINISM for our voices to be heard. No matter you are a man, woman, gay person, lesbian, transgender person, etc you are more than welcome to the clan.

6. FEMINISTS ARE AGAINST THE INSTITUTE OF MARRIAGE, PROCREATION AND DISREGARD FAMILIAL VALUES

GOOD LORD! Who even comes up with such ideas?! There are many feminists out there who are happily married and have children. Feminists aren’t against marriage, they’re rather against a marriage that imposes and expects what they do not agree with. If marrying a person, having children and just being a housewife is her choice then feminists wouldn’t go AGAINST it. Remember, feminists aren’t against what a woman decides but against what is ‘imposed or expected’.

7. FEMINISM IS A DRIFT TOWARDS MATRIARCHY

Poor soul, if you believe feminism is coaxing and cajoling the society to move towards a patriarchal structure, you couldn’t be more wrong. Feminism is a movement that neither supports patriarchy nor matriarchy. All it strives for is a world where women breathe as independently as men, where a woman earns as equal as a man and a society where no one glowers at a woman wearing a hijab or frowns at a girl wearing a bikini, a society where no one scoffs at a man wearing pink or scowls at a man who does household chores. It’s just one fight that claims equality for every individual breathing on earth.

8. FEMINISM IS AGAINST FEMININITY

Not every girl thinks of a bra as an oppression or shaving or make-up as giving into the ideal type of beauty standards. There are a whole bunch of feminists who hate to step out without their matte lip rouge and there are also those who love to shave their legs even when they’re not wearing a skirt. It’s about time we stopped generalizing and targeting feminists for nothing.

9. FEMINISM IN INDIA IS MORE LIKE PROMOTING WESTERNIZATION

Wait, what? Although feminism did start in western countries first, it is not entirely imitating the western culture and values. We do denounce some of the Indian ideas comparing them to those in the west but they’re only the oppressive ones. And as for WESTERNIZATION, it started having its influence long ago and is a concept independent of FEMINISM.

10. FEMINISTS ARE HYPOCRITES

A common belief among many of us is that feminists are hypocrites and they preach what they don’t practice. This is because of some pseudofeminists who are bringing shame to feminists. They’d announce that they work for equal rights but would expect their date to pay for them. Well, that’s not feminism. Feminists do not expect their male counterparts to open the door for them, to hold their shopping bags for them or to pay for them. If they do this it might be out of courtesy but they don’t expect them to do this. These are the expected gender roles which feminists work against.

11. FEMINISM IS NOT NEEDED NOW

Well, it’s agreed that women started entering the big corporate world and in many other socio-political fields and their contribution is commendably conducive. Nonetheless, the female population achieving is merely about a quarter or a half as compared to men and we still have many more miles to go.
